Find where water backs up

Gutter trouble often shows up as overflow, standing debris, a loose section, a leak, or water collecting by a downspout. Note which sides of the home are affected, when it appears, and whether roof or fascia work is planned. This helps separate cleaning from repair or replacement.

Gutter and drainage projects include cleaning, replacement, and downspout work. The proposal should name the sections reviewed and state whether roof-edge repairs, underground drainage, or landscaping are included. Record whether overflow appears at one joint, one outlet, or across a longer run; that pinpoints the problem.

Separate cleaning from replacement

A cleaning scope should name the gutter runs, accessible downspouts, and debris removal. A repair scope should identify the section, joint, or outlet and any replacement parts. Full replacement needs a named material, profile, color, attachment, outlets, and disposal plan.

The bid should show whether fascia, trim, or roof-edge work is included or referred to another trade. It should also identify the downspout discharge point and any ground-level or underground drainage left outside the project.

  • Cleaning limits and downspout flushing, if included.
  • Repair locations and replacement part assumptions.
  • New system materials, color, outlets, and disposal.
  • Drainage destination and excluded site work.

Map the water path

Map the water path with ground-level observations: affected edge, outlet, nearby staining, recent roof or siding work, and any known drainage project. Note whether you want a temporary repair or a full system change.

List underground drains or grading as separate concerns. A provider can then explain whether that work fits the gutter scope or needs another trade.

Get a gutter proposal

For a gutter proposal, share the city, affected side, symptom, and whether you want cleaning, repair, replacement, or a downspout adjustment. Include access limits and the sections that appear affected.

Check the contractor record through Washington L&I and compare products, drainage details, cleanup, change approvals, and payment terms. This keeps bids focused on the water path you want to improve.
