Compare the full roofing system

Compare asphalt shingles with a named metal profile using your roof layout and the work each proposal includes. The estimator shows selected asphalt references and a standing-seam metal reference. Other metal profiles need their own project quote.

Start with the same measured roof area and removal assumption for both options. Then compare underlayment, fastening, flashing, edges, valleys, penetrations, ventilation, disposal, deck review, and cleanup. A material label alone does not describe the finished scope.

Use the roof details to compare fit

List each roof plane, porch, dormer, addition, chimney, skylight, and connection to an existing roof. These details tell the provider where the covering changes direction or meets another surface. Ask each proposal to show what happens at those transitions.

For the current material and scope boundaries, read the estimator method. The metal roofing page describes the standing-seam reference, while the asphalt shingle page explains the supported shingle scenarios.

  • Ask for the exact product and accessory names.
  • Compare the same removal and disposal assumptions.
  • Identify roof edges, valleys, penetrations, and wall connections.
  • Get deck repairs and added work explained before approval.

Compare like-for-like proposals

A preliminary range helps organize questions; it is not a contractor quote or an inspection. Ask what the estimator covers, what the proposal adds, and which conditions remain unknown until the roof is reviewed or opened.

If you are considering cedar or a different metal profile, request a separate product-specific price. Those scenarios are not added to the calculator by selecting a similar material name.

Prepare a useful estimate request

Share your city, roof-area source if known, current covering, preferred product, and the areas where roof planes meet walls or additions. Ask each provider to identify included scope, exclusions, and how hidden deck conditions would be handled.

Use the roof estimator to review its supported planning scenarios, then send the project details for a written scope discussion. Check the provider record through Washington L&I before hiring.
